  INTRODUCTION
  
  The present research is devoted to the problem of reflection of national-cultural identity and historical past in the lexical units used in the British English language. It is known that language is closely connected with the history of nation and its contacts with other nations. Every event in the life of people is reflected in the language. As a result, a lot of vocabulary units in the language express historical changes or cultural connotation more or less explicitly.
  In modern linguistics the problem of the study of vocabulary units reflecting national-cultural identity and historical past within British variant of the English language is one of the most topical and actual. Scientists direct their researches into the problems of native and borrowed elements reflecting the history of the language, the question of culture-specific lexical units and their level of culture representation. Despite the great interest towards the problem of national-cultural and historical vocabulary of British English in the sphere of modern linguistics, there are still a lot of underinvestigated questions such as interpretation of cultural component in a word meaning, the position of cultural connotation and its influence on the interpretation of the whole context, the typology of vocabulary units expressing culture and history of the British nation. Moreover, the most researches of reflection of national-cultural identity and historical past of British English are very narrow and include only several groups of such lexemes.

  1.1 Historical Past of the British Nation and Its Influence on British English Development
  
  Every national language is not just a system of verbal signs composing human communication. It is linked with the fact that language was not investigated for some goals, but appeared and was developing together with the evolution of people speaking this language. Thereby, national language is one of the main domains of its people, nation or country. Moreover, country and nations can appear and disappear one day from the political world map. But language exists throughout centuries being conveyed from generation to generation. That is why people can live under different flags and emblems, but still they are combined by their unique language.
  So, language is a means of reflecting national-cultural identity and historical past of people speaking it. The nation’s history influences greatly on the language not only in political or social aspect but also in the pure linguistic aspect. It means that language is changing under the influence of nations’ contacts. The changes are seen mostly in its vocabulary. The more contacts the nation has in its history, the more borrowed words their language has. When the language is lingua franca (as in case with English in the present day situation), it is an interlanguage for people of different nationalities. As a result this interlanguage gets more rich language features and changes its vocabulary [3, p.19].
