  Introduction
  
  The present graduation paper presents the research of current tendencies of the punctuation systems in the Russian and English languages. The usage of punctuation marks is reduced mostly to separating, emphasizing and linking functions and is governed by the set of rules which are specific for every language. The topicality of comparative analysis consists in the discordance of punctuation rules in the English and Russian languages. It can be explained, first of all, by the obligatory punctuation rules in Russian and recommending nature of punctuation rules in English. The present research tries to reveal a number of similarities and differences in the punctuation systems of the two languages.
  In connection with the above we can affirm the topicality of our investigation.
  The topicality of the present research defines the aim and the tasks of our work.
  The aim of the present research is to analyze the discordance of punctuation rules in the English and Russian languages.
  The tasks of our work are the following:
  1. To distinguish the notion “punctuation” in the framework of a semiotic system.
  2. To examine historical evolution of punctuation in the English and Russian languages.
  3. To disclose the current state of English and Russian punctuation.
  4. To investigate punctuation rules of the period, the comma, the semicolon and quotation marks in the English and Russian languages.

  Chapter I. Theoretical Fundamentals of Punctuation as a Semiotic System
  1.1. Punctuation as a Semiotic System
  
  Punctuation as a system of graphical non-alphabetical symbols and rules has always been one of the most important branches of linguistics. The necessity of the study of punctuation system in the languages can be explained by the fact that the usage of different punctuation marks has always been arguable and ambiguous. Both in the English and Russian languages the system of punctuation has been changed greatly with the changes of the language itself. Those changes happened and still happen in modern languages because they express the life of the languages. That’s why stable and codified punctuation rules always distinguish the definite period of time. Undoubtedly, the development in writing and printing technologies has had some influence on language usage in written documents since the invention of the first alphabet. The creation of an efficient system of printing influenced the development of punctuation as a whole [26, p. 4]. That’s why the study of modern punctuation is very important at present.
  In the present research we will investigate the notion “punctuation” within the framework of semiotic system, the study of signs and of semiosis, that is, the process of "meaning-making" [17, p. 285].
  The word “punctuation” is borrowed from Latin punctum meaning ‘dot’ and punctuation ‘arrangement of dots’. That’s why in the early Russian grammarians’ works the whole chapters were called «O tochkakh», «O sile tochek», «O tochechnom razume».
