    INTRODUCTION
    The graduating paper is devoted to the problem of phraseological units classification.
    The question of classification of idioms is very ambiguous, because of many-sidedness of idioms’ features on which different linguists have their own point of view. So, the principles of classification need to be cleared up in contrast and comparison to each other. This explains vitality of the chosen theme.
    The aim of the paper is elaborating different approaches to classification of phraseological units. Its solving supposes fulfilling the following tasks:
    1) studying the problem of definition, characteristics and relations of phraseological units with other lexical units;
    2) investigating different approaches to classification of phraseological units;
    3) pointing out the most productive ways of classification;
    4) working out classification of a set of units according to the most effective principles of classification.
    The methods of the research are:
    1) critical analysis of the scientific sources – in studying the question under consideration;
    2) method of total examining – in choosing the material for the research;
    3) describing method – in characterizing phraseological units;
    4) method of component analysis and grouping – in working out classification tables;
    1. PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS: THEORETICAL REGULATIONS AND APPARATUS OF INVESTIGATION
    In this part the following problems will be investigated: definition and features, phraseological units vs. other lexical units, semantic relations in English phraseology, principles of phraseological units classification.

    1.1 Phraseological Units: Definition and Features
    It has been repeatedly pointed out that word-groups viewed as functionally and semantically inseparable units are traditionally regarded as the subject matter of phraseology [1:231].
    Phraseology appeared in the domain of lexicology and is undergoing the process of segregating as a separate branch of linguistics. The reason is clear – lexicology deals with words and their meanings, whereas phraseology studies such collocations of words (phraseologisms, phraseological units, idioms), where the meaning of the whole collocation is different from the simple sum of literal meanings of the words, comprising a phraseological unit: “Dutch auction” is not an auction taking place in Netherlands. The meaning of this phraseological unit refers to any auction, where instead of rising, the prices fall (compare “Dutch comfort”, “Dutch courage”, “Dutch treat” reflecting complicated historical factors) [42].
    Idioms are a class of multi-word units "which pose a challenge to our understanding of grammar and lexis that has not yet been fully met" (Fellbaum, 2006:349). They are commonly believed to be qualitatively different from 'normal' language, but the precise nature of this difference can be elusive. Even amongst idiom scholars, it is difficult to find a consensus as to what precisely is, or is not, an idiom, because of the heterogeneity of the class.
