  Introduction
  
  Parenthesis is a very unambiguous phenomenon in linguistics. First of all, researchers understand different things by parenthesis: only words, only phrases, both words and sentences, syntactical constructions, or even punctuation mark. Consequently, the notion of parenthesis is not fully investigated at present. That is why the theme of the present word is very actual nowadays.
  The aim of the work is to analyze parenthesis functions in the English and Russian language.
  The tasks of the work are the following:
  1. To examine the notion of the term “parenthesis” and its characterization.
  2. To study main functions of parenthesis from the point of view of different researchers.
  3. To analyze functions of parenthesis in the English language.
  4. To characterize functions of parenthesis in the Russian language.
  5. To investigate parenthesis in comparative aspect.
  The object of the present work is the notion of parenthesis.

  Chapter 1. The essence of parenthesis
  1.1. The notion of the term “parenthesis” and its characterization
  
  The notion of the term “parenthesis” can’t be called unambiguous. By parenthesis we can understand different things:
  • a word inserted in a sentence;
  • several words inserted in a sentence;
  • digression;
  • an interval;
  • round brackets used to mark off a parenthesis [Singh 2005, p. 533].
  Martin Hilpert adds that the term “parenthesis” can be also used in terms of syntax. According to the researcher, parenthetical structures display a complex behaviour that has traits of both syntactic dependence and syntactic independence. On the one hand, parentheticals are clearly dependent on a larger structure that functions as a host. On the other hand, parenthetical structures are often characterized as syntactically independent. Unlike subordinate clauses, they are not integrated into the constituent structure of the main clause in a straightforward manner, showing a high degree of freedom with regard to their placement [Hilpert 2013, p. 172].
  The word “parenthetical” itself is unambiguous. Concerning “Webster's New World Dictionary”, we can speak about two meanings of this adjective:
  • contained in or as if in parentheses: qualifying or explanatory;
